Day
1 & 2 -- Greater Boston, Massachusetts
Start your vacation with two nights in Boston's charming Copley
Square Hotel. Near Boston's famed Freedom Trail, you'll see
Faneuil Hall Marketplace, Old North Church (of "one if by
land" fame), and the USS Constitution, the venerable frigate
known as "Old Ironsides." Take the "T" to
Cambridge, where you'll enjoy the energy and sophistication of
students, professors, and artists in the close-knit communities of
Harvard and MIT. 2 nights in Boston. Lodging:
Omni
Parker House
Day 3 --
Boston to Kennebunkport, Maine (91 mi/147 km)
Travel along the craggy North Shore of Massachusetts, through the
charming slip of coastal New Hampshire, and into Maine. On your way
up the coast, stop in Kittery for outstanding factory outlet
shopping. Peek at former President George Bush's summer home in
Kennebunkport, then dip your toes in the surf on a soft, sandy
beach. 1 night in Kennebunkport.

Day 4 --
Kennebunkport to White Mountains, New Hampshire (102 mi/164 km)
Journey through the Maine Lakes region on your way to the
breathtaking White Mountains, a jagged skyline of raw granite peaks
protruding above pine trees and precipitous valleys sculpted by
glaciers long ago. North Conway is a shopper's paradise with
countless factory outlets offering top quality goods at rock bottom
prices. The nearby Mt. Washington Toll Road takes you to the summit
of the Northeast's highest (and windiest!) mountain. Bretton Woods,
at the foot of the mountain, is famous for its scenery, fresh air,
and World War II diplomatic conferences. 1 night in White Mountains.
Lodging:
Eagle Mountain House
Day 5 --
White Mountains to Green Mountains, Vermont (86 mi/138 km)
Drive to the summit of Mt Washington, shop, visit the Flume in
Franconia Notch and then cross the border into Vermont. Vermont's Green Mountains are a
bright palette of covered bridges, country stores, camera-friendly
cows, and in autumn the best foliage anywhere. See the "Rock of
Ages" granite quarry, or enjoy a maple tour and tasting at
Morse Farm before arriving at your home for the next two nights near
Burlington and Lake Champlain. 2 nights amid the Green Mountains of
Vermont. Lodging: Green Mountain Inn, Stowe
Day 6 --
Green Mountains, Vermont
A leisurely day for touring the Green Mountain State. Treat
yourself to a tour of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Factory before
heading to Burlington, perched on the banks of Lake Champlain, New
England's "Great Lake." Visit the Ethan Allen Homestead to
recall the colorful colonial days of the Revolution's Green Mountain
Boys, perhaps a scenic cruise on Lake Champlain, or a visit to the
Vermont Teddy Bear Company. Don't miss the Shelburne Museum with its
eccentric collections of Americana, gardens, and the huge side
wheeler, SS Ticonderoga.
Day 7 --
Green Mountains to The Berkshires, Massachusetts (228 mi/367 km)
Drive south to see the quintessential New England village of
Woodstock, with its traditional shops and covered bridge. Time also
to see the scenic Quechee Gorge, New England's "Mini-Grand
Canyon," before arriving in Massachusetts and the gentle
Berkshire Hills. Perhaps visit the Hancock Shaker Village, a
restored 19th-century settlement, and then Lenox, summer home of the
Boston Symphony. Your final destination is Stockbridge, once home to
Norman Rockwell, whose museum contains many of his original works. 1
night in Stockbridge. Lodging: Red Lion Inn
Day 8
& 9 --
The Berkshires to Newport, Rhode Island (157 mi/253 km)
En route to Newport you may want to visit Old Sturbridge Village, a
19th-century living-history settlement, or Mystic Seaport in
Connecticut, America's largest maritime museum. Continue to Newport,
summer resort to America's first millionaires, where you can tour a
house that covers an entire acre, one with a 3,000 square-foot
ballroom, and another with 23 bathrooms. These summer
"cottages" were built by the Astors, Vanderbilts, et al;
the four-mile Cliff Walk snakes between the mansions and the
Atlantic and offers the best views of each. Lodging:
Inn
at Newport Beach
Day 10 --
Newport to Cape Cod, Massachusetts (92 mi/148 km)
It's a short drive to Olde Cape Cod, where you'll get your fill of
surf, sand, and salty coastal charm. Visit famous sea captains'
homes on the Cape's north shore, or stake a claim in the sand dunes
of the outer Cape for solitude and sunbathing. 2 nights on Cape Cod.
Lodging: Belfry
Inn
Day 11 -- Cape Cod, Massachusetts
Find the fragile beaches and marshes of the Cape Cod National
Seashore, dally and dine in the artists' haven of Provincetown at
the tip of the Cape, or take a daylong cruise to the romantic
islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard for a stroll down
cobblestone streets lined with fragrant gardens.
Day 12 -- Cape Cod to Boston, Massachusetts (89 mi/143 km)
En route back to Boston, visit Sandwich, the Cape's oldest town, and
Plymouth, where you can explore Plimoth Plantation, which vividly
re-creates the Pilgrims' story with costumed interpreters in a
historically accurate setting. Step aboard the Mayflower II for a
passenger's view of the famous voyage.
