Skyland
Resort, first called Stony Man Camp, was begun in 1886 by George
Freeman Pollock, Jr. Influential in establishing Shenandoah as a
national park, Pollock chose the perfect spot for his summer
retreat. At 3,680 feet, which is now the highest point on the
Skyline Drive, Pollock had breathtaking views of the Shenandoah
Valley.
Quite
different from its 19th century origins, Skyland today offers
visitors 177 lodging units, ranging from quaint rustic cabins to
spacious suites with spectacular vistas.
Big Meadows
Lodge: the name comes from the large, grassy meadow near the resort.
At an elevation of 3,510 feet, legend has it that the meadow was
kept open by native tribes to encourage the growth of wild berries
and to attract deer, elk, and bison to graze. Today deer are still
seen here, particularly during the evening and early morning hours.
Accommodations
at historic Big Meadows range from 25 rooms in the main lodge to 72
additional rooms in rustic cabins, multi-unit lodges and modern
suites. The original lodge was built in 1939 by the Civilian
Conservation Corps private contractors, and mountain labor with
stones cut from Massanutten Mountain. The entire interior structure
of the lodge, including the paneling is made from native oak and
chestnut trees. Chestnuts are virtually extinct due to the chestnut
blight that arrived in this country in 1905.
